Optimizing Gearbox Efficiency Through Advanced Power Loss Prediction
Abstract: The knowledge of component power losses during steady state conditions is essential for an optimal design gearbox. Understanding the individual component losses allows for decisions to be made at an early design stage to improve overall gearbox efficiency. GT has developed a workflow for gearbox loss prediction which has been validated against test measurement using a system-level modeling approach.
This work has also been extended to even higher fidelity tribology models for the gear tooth and roller bearing contacts where a formal Elastic-hydro-dynamic solution has been introduced to gain additional insights regarding losses and their reduction with detailed geometry modifications. Additionally, this high-fidelity solution allows for the consideration of temperature effects and localized effects which can be evaluated for This enables to solve for the balance equation to capture the temperature of the oil film and the body temperatures and stresses below the surface of the Gear3D and Roller Bearing3D surfaces.
